Best Units

Our Candy Kingdom Defense best units tier list ranks Lich, evolved Jake, and Princess Bubblegum so you know where to spend Gems and Trait Crystals.

How This Tier List Works

Candy Kingdom Defense throws candy zombies, snow golems, and Lemongrab's sour army at you in escalating waves, and each of those enemy types punishes a different weakness. A unit that melts single targets can drown in a swarm, while a pure AoE pick can stall against a bulky wave leader. This ranking weighs three things: wave clear, boss damage, and how expensive a unit is to get online.

Treat every tier as a recommendation rather than a rule. The game is young, balance changes land often, and a heavily invested B-tier unit with strong traits will usually outperform a bare S-tier pick you have not upgraded yet. Use the tiers to decide where your Gems, Trait Crystals, and evolution materials go first — not to decide what is "allowed" on your team.

S-Tier Picks and How to Unlock Them

Lich

Lich is the headline unit. Its area coverage is the widest in the game, and it keeps growing with each upgrade — the early levels add new attack behavior, while later levels mostly scale the same attack for more damage. That means even a low-level Lich is useful, and a maxed one covers lanes on its own.

Getting one is the hard part. The Lich comes from a special portal that only appears in the endless mode.

RollChanceNotes
Portal appears30%Checked every 10 waves in endless mode
Lich drops from a portal5%Per portal, not per wave

Plan for a long grind: you can farm the endless-mode portal that opens every 10 waves while you level the rest of your team, and treat a Lich drop as a bonus rather than a goal you can rush.

Evolved Jake

Jake's evolved form is the safest frontline-style pick in the game. It hits the entire lane rather than a small cluster, so swarms stop mattering. With full investment and good traits it becomes genuinely hard for enemies to walk past.

Evolution materials come from challenge rewards. For Jake, that means collecting specific items such as sandwiches, and at least one requirement is tied to winning Act 5 in the Ice Kingdom. Open the evolution screen, check what a unit needs, and use the teleport shortcut to jump straight to the right challenge.

Evolved Princess Bubblegum

Princess Bubblegum's evolution is a transformation-based attacker that swaps into a much heavier form and shreds packed waves. Players who have run both often rate her above the evolved Magic Man, mainly because her damage spreads instead of landing on one target. If you pull her early, she is worth every material you can spare.

Mid-Tier Units That Still Earn a Slot

Evolved Magic Man is the classic trap in reverse: it looks incredible and mostly is, but the splash radius is narrower than the S-tier carries and the spawn delay means fast waves slip past. Pair it with anything that slows or stuns.

Rainicorn plays like a quicker Magic Man — less damage per hit, much better coverage. If you are choosing between the two for a general lane, Rainicorn is the more forgiving pick.

Lemongrab is underrated. Its lemons deal serious damage and stun what they touch, and the evil version summons stronger lemons that stun for longer. Lemons emerge from the portal it creates and from the trail it leaves on the floor, so place it where enemies must walk over that ground. Many tier lists bury Lemongrab in C; that ranking undersells how much a stun-heavy summoner buys you on crowded waves.

Finn is a pleasant surprise. He is cheap, he hits consistently, and he does not need an evolution to contribute. Use him to hold a lane while your carries farm.

Billy is the one to avoid. The damage numbers are genuinely huge, but the attack pattern is clunky and slow enough that the small enemies walk right past him. Damage that never connects is not damage.

Traits, Gems, and Codes: Building Faster

Raw unit levels only take you so far. Traits are the multiplier that turns a good unit into a carry, and Trait Crystals are the bottleneck — which is why free code rewards matter so much early on.

CodeReward
HALLOWEENSOON1,000 Gems, 15 Trait Crystals
THANKSFOR100CCU500 Gems, 20 Trait Crystals
THANKSFOR200LIKES1,500 Gems, 10 Trait Crystals

RELEASE1,500 Gems, 15 Trait Crystals, 5 Units of Juice

To claim them, walk up to Jake in the main lobby, use the TALK prompt, type the code into the box, and hit REDEEM. Entering codes is not case-sensitive, so spelling is the only thing to watch. You can redeem Candy Kingdom Defense codes at Jake in the lobby any time, and the rewards stack straight into your Gem and Trait Crystal totals.

Investment StepWhy It Comes First
Unlock one S-tier carryOne strong lane-holder beats four average ones
Level that carry to maxUpgrades scale damage far more than new units do
Roll traits on the carryTraits are the largest single power spike
Add a stunner or slowerProtects slow attackers like Magic Man
Fill leftover lanes with FinnCheap coverage while you farm evolutions

A few habits keep the grind short. Check the evolution screen before farming anything, because if a unit does not appear there it simply has no evolution — Flame is a good example. Run endless mode when you want portal rolls and act challenges when you need specific materials, not the other way around. And do not spread Gems across five units; a single maxed carry with strong traits clears more than a full team of half-built ones.

FAQ

What are the Candy Kingdom Defense best units overall? Lich, evolved Jake, and evolved Princess Bubblegum sit at the top. All three bring area damage wide enough to handle swarms, and all three keep improving with upgrades and traits.

How do you actually get the Lich? Play endless mode and watch for the special portal, which has a 30% chance to appear every 10 waves. Once a portal spawns, there is a 5% chance the Lich comes out of it, so expect multiple runs before you see one.

Is Billy worth building? No. His damage numbers are impressive, but the slow, awkward attack pattern lets small enemies slip through. Spend those materials on Finn or Lemongrab instead.

Do I need evolutions to clear early acts? Not at all. Cheap units like Finn handle the early waves fine. Save your evolution materials for the carries listed above, since evolving the wrong unit costs you the challenge runs you need to farm more.
